Exterior Finishes

One 375g bag of Realistic Brick Compound will cover an area of 4.5 square feet or 0.5 square metre approx. This is typically sufficient to cover a small to medium size dolls house (2 - 3 room), but this is just a guide as coverage varies according to application thickness etc. This is roughly equivalent to 3000 individual bricks. The photos above give a rough guide to the finished colours achieved using the Realistic Brick Compound - Results may vary (see below). The compound colour will appear to change during the application process, for example it will usually appear darker when wet than when dry. We recommend making a small sample to check the finished colour before applying the compound to a project. Shading: If desired, after application the compound can be shaded using acrylic paints to create a more authentic and weathered appearance. It is best to do this before sealing. Sealing: The compound should be sealed with a clear matt varnish when the application is complete. Many different varnishes are available and we recommend testing on a small area before applications results vary. Sealing with varnish will waterproof and protect the finish and usually makes the finished colour slightly darker. We recommend using Winsor & Newton Clear Matt Varnish

Frost Square Asphalt Shingles, 157 Square Inches

Size: 1 inch x 35 inches, 8 strips per bag, Coverage: 157 square inches

***** How to apply asphalt roofing *****

You will need sharp scissors, a tacky wood glue (or hot glue gun, but it's not necessary) and a good eye for symmetry.

Start by laying the first row upside down flush along the bottom row of your roofing area. Start with the left side of your strip, and cut off any excess. Lay the second row parallel to it and translated up by about half an inch, to line up the top of the tab slot with the top of the previous row. The edge of the shingle strip should line up with the edge of the roof, but likely only for this row. Then, lay the third row staggered over to the left by about half a shingle, lined up the same way, with a small section of the strip overhanging the roof. Cut this section off, trimmed to the roof edge.

Lay the fourth row so that it is lined up with the second row's shingles as exactly as possible, and then the fifth row lined up with the third, and so on.

Optional: For a sturdier roof bond, use staples to secure the strip, on sections which will be covered by the next row.

When nearing the roof peak, cut a strip to meet flush with the edge if necessary. Make sure the opposite side of the roof is finished the same way before continuing.

To cap the roof, cut off single squares, fold them evenly in half, and glue them overlapping the previous shingle by one quarter inch along the roof peak.

For a neat, pressed look to your freshly glued shingles, lay a board over the top and apply weight until the shingles dry.

Lintel width 143mm approx (1:12 scale version). Can be cut down to fit smaller windows. Stencil Options Explained... Stencil Material Mylar (Polyester) - Requires a separate repositional adhesive such as 3M Craft Mount or Spray Mount. Mylar is a tough plastic like material so stencils are durable and easy to handle and can be re-used many times. Self-Adhesive PVC - Includes a repositionable self-adhesive backing so is supplied ready to use. This material is not as tough as Mylar, but can be re-used several times if handled carefully.
